- The 0620 syllabus. The official Cambridge syllabus document lists every assessable point. It is the single most underused free resource: it tells you exactly what can be examined and, crucially, what cannot, so you stop wasting hours on material outside the course.
- Past papers and mark schemes. A decade of them. The papers are the practice; the mark schemes are the teacher. Never do one without the other.

Now mark it against the scheme, not against your impression. The 0620 scheme wants two distinct points: (1) particles have more energy / a greater proportion have energy above the activation energy, and (2) more frequent collisions. The student’s “move faster” gestures at energy but does not say collisions become more energetic or that more collisions are successful; “hit each other more” is the frequency idea but vaguely put. A strict marker awards 1 of 2, and notes the missing language: “energy” and “successful collisions”. That gap, found by honest self-marking, is the exact thing to fix. A student who marked this “looks right, 2 marks” learns nothing and repeats the loss in the exam.

The mistakes that sink self-studiers
Self-study fails in predictable ways, and all of them are avoidable:

- Marking yourself generously. The single biggest self-study trap. If you award the mark your idea deserves rather than the mark the scheme awards, you are training the wrong answer.
- Avoiding the four hard areas. Comfort-revising the easy topics is the default drift of unsupervised study. The marks are concentrated in the hard four; the hours should be too.
- Ignoring Paper 6. Nobody self-teaches the practical paper by accident; it has to be chosen deliberately. A self-studier strong on theory and untrained on Paper 6 has already lost their A* margin.
