The IGCSE Chemistry Error Log
A total score tells you how you did. An error log tells you why - and what to fix. Record every mistake by its cause, write the rule that would have earned the mark, and set a date to retest yourself. It is the single habit that separates a plateau from steady improvement.
How to use an error log
- After every paper or topical set, take each wrong or dropped mark in turn.
- Name the cause, not just the topic. The same topic can fail for different reasons.
- Write the correction rule in one line - the thing you will do next time.
- Set a retest date a week or two out and answer a fresh question on the same skill.
- Only cross an item off when you get the retest right. Transfer, not recognition, is the goal.
Error categories
Knowledge gap
You did not know the fact or definition.
Unit / value
Right method, wrong unit, power of ten or rounding.
Ratio / mole
Balancing, mole ratio or formula-mass slip.
Application
Knew the fact but applied it to the wrong situation.
Command word
Answered 'describe' when it asked 'explain', missed a mark word.
Practical method
Apparatus, safety, reading or method detail.
Misread
Rushed the question or missed a condition.
Timing
Ran out of time or left it blank.
