What IGCSE Chemistry 0620 actually is

0620 is the Cambridge International qualification in chemistry, sat by most students in Malaysian international and private schools, usually across Years 10 and 11 (Form 4 and Form 5 equivalents). It is a standalone subject grade that appears on the certificate your child carries into A Levels, foundation programmes, and university applications.

Two things matter for you as a parent. First, it is graded by Cambridge in the UK, against a fixed published mark scheme, not by the school. Your child’s school teacher delivers the course, but a Cambridge examiner awards the marks, and the examiner only credits answers phrased the way the mark scheme demands. Second, if your child’s school quotes code 0971 instead of 0620, it is the same course and the same papers, simply graded on the 9-1 scale rather than A*-G. Everything below applies identically.

How the grade is built: three papers

This is the single most useful thing for a parent to understand, because it explains why a child can “know chemistry” and still drop grades. The 0620 grade is assembled from three different exam components, each testing a different skill:

Is your child sitting 0620 or 0971?

Many parents see one of these two codes on a school report and worry they are different courses. They are not. 0620 and 0971 are the same Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry, with the same syllabus, the same papers and the same content. The only difference is the grade scale: 0620 is graded A to G*, while 0971 is graded 9 to 1 (9 being the top). Core or Extended: the one decision that sets the ceiling

Every 0620 student is entered for one of two tiers, and this decision caps the grade before the exam is even sat:

  • Core covers the foundation content and sits gentler papers, but the grade is capped at C. A* through B are not available on this route.
  • Extended covers everything, sits harder papers, and is the only route to A through C*.

Most students aiming at A Levels or competitive university courses need Extended, because the C ceiling on Core closes doors later. The two-year timeline, and what to watch at each stage

Chemistry is taught over roughly two years, and the difficulty is not evenly spread. Knowing the shape helps you read whether your child is where they should be.

  • Year 10 (Form 4): the foundations land here: atomic structure, bonding, the mole, acids and bases, the periodic table. This is where calmly fixing a weak start is cheap. A child who falls behind on the mole in Year 10 carries that gap into everything after it.
  • Year 11 (Form 5): the hardest material (organic chemistry, electrolysis, the practical paper) usually arrives now, in the same crowded year as every other subject’s exam preparation. This is where most “chemistry suddenly got hard” moments happen, and they are usually about scheduling, not ability.
  • The final two terms: past papers, exam technique, and closing the last two or three weak topics. The difference between a B and an A is most often made here, which is why a rough mock in Year 11 is a prompt to act, not a verdict.

How to tell if your child is genuinely on track

School reports are designed to reassure. They are not evidence of exam readiness. The single most reliable check costs nothing: one full past paper, sat in timed conditions, marked against the real Cambridge mark scheme, and sorted by topic. How a non-chemist parent can actually help

You do not need to teach the subject. The support that moves grades is structural, and any parent can provide it:

  1. Protect the schedule. Chemistry rewards little-and-often over cramming, especially the memory-heavy ion and gas tests. Ten minutes of flashcards daily beats a panicked all-nighter.
  2. Ask for marked evidence, not feelings. “Which topics did you score lowest on, and what’s the plan?” keeps a child honest in a way “how’s chemistry going?” never will.
  3. Make sure the practical paper is not ignored. It is 20% of the grade and the part schools most often under-teach. If your child cannot describe how their last lesson touched Paper 5 or Paper 6, that is a flag.
